THE CHALLENGE
Apprehensive about IT outsourcing
The company needed specialized, niche software engineering skills to work on product development projects in its automotive division. However, the company was very concerned about bringing in outside resources to augment its internal project teams.
THE TRANSFORMATION

After lengthy discussions to ensure company leaders were comfortable with UST, engineering, product development, and IT leaders decided to enhance its IT services and testing teams with 10 UST resources. With that initial engagement in 2014, UST began a series of workshops to help the company understand the benefits of IT outsourcing and an outcomes-based approach to project delivery.
As company leaders in the automotive line of business gradually started to see a transformation across its product development teams, the company increased its UST resource headcount to 150 in 2017 and 210 in 2018. By 2022, more than 300 UST associates around the globe were assigned to the account. At the same time, the scope of projects expanded from the initial IT services and testing engagement to encompass hardware, software development, mechanical systems, and firmware in the engine control unit across all automotive segments, including infotainment, instrument clusters, the gasoline system, and electric hybrid vehicles.
By providing a unique combination of software development, automation, experience design, and resource cross-training, UST has delivered human-centered design above and beyond software engineering skills. The result has been more intuitive, streamlined systems for things like multi-modality connected cars, telematics, geo-fencing, over-the-air updates, power steering firmware development, meter algorithms, and benchmarking.
