Upgrades to hospital system increase performance, security and scalability

International health technology company improves on-time and on-budget delivery of projects

THE CLIENT

This international company uses leading research, design, and innovation capabilities to transform the delivery of healthcare. The company is a leader in diagnostic imaging, image-guided therapy, patient monitoring, and health informatics, consumer health, and home care.

THE CHALLENGE

Old infrastructure affected support for more than 500 hospitals, potentially impacting patients’ lives

The company’s medical picture archiving and communications system (PACS), which digitally captures, stores, distributes, displays, and archives 2D and 3D diagnostic imaging files, was housed on old infrastructure.

The client’s PACS suite included a full suite of multimodality applications that enable hospitals and imaging centers to combine their individual data to create a comprehensive medical experience for the patient. It also improves clinical workflows and communications for increased diagnostic confidence. A software and hardware upgrade and migration in the United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific was crucial to unlocking these advantages.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Migrated legacy hardware and software at speed and scale to end-customer data centers

While the company upgraded its software, UST used an internally developed tool to migrate its PACS DCX 3.x to version 4.x. Efficiently and securely migrating customers to a 4.x environment included upgrading physical servers in the end customers’ data centers, followed by deployment of virtual environments.

Applications were installed and configured virtually, then the data was migrated and deployed to a live production environment. Advanced applications were distributed from the server repository, making them available on a single workstation. This reduced the need for multiple workstations, easing workstation administration responsibilities.

THE IMPACT

Increased customer engagement and satisfaction with on-time and on-budget delivery

The migration was delivered to more than 500 hospitals across the globe, supporting the infrastructure needs of more than 660 intensive care unit beds. It also provided the specialized skills needed to support complex PACS implementations.

The client achieved the following significant milestones:
