The urgency of AI adoption: A strategic priority for 93% of organizations

There is a clear management buy-in for AI implementation. The survey underscores the strategic imperative of AI in global enterprises. With the opportunities and challenges of AI making headlines, it's no surprise that AI adoption in business is becoming a top priority for management. According to the survey, over 90% of large companies report that their AI implementation aligns with their strategic goals, highlighting the importance of AI in global organizations. Moreover, 93% believe AI will become essential across industries within five years.

Despite widespread acknowledgment of the benefits of AI, implementing AI in the enterprise is challenging. Only 14% of respondents cited a lack of understanding of AI's benefits, indicating a robust internal buy-in for AI's value. However, nearly half (44%) describe the AI implementation process as challenging, indicating the need for more support in addressing security, workforce, and regulatory concerns.

The survey also highlights that AI is critical to broader digital transformation efforts. AI's role becomes increasingly pivotal as companies look to improve customer experience, create operational efficiencies, and reduce costs. This trend is reflected in the growing proportion of products and services with significant digital components, which has increased by 45% over the past three years.

Investment in AI is rising, with large enterprises recognizing the need to ramp up spending to stay competitive. About 89% of respondents believe increasing investment in AI is crucial to keeping up with competitors. Only 5% of companies spend over half of their technology budget on AI, which is expected to increase to 18% within the next three years. This upward trend in AI spending indicates a broader commitment to integrating AI into business strategies.

Shortage of in-house AI skills

Despite strong management buy-in for AI adoption, a significant challenge facing AI in global enterprises is the shortage of in-house AI skills. The AI survey reveals that 76% of large companies report a severe lack of skilled personnel to effectively implement and leverage AI technologies. This skills gap is a major obstacle in realizing the full benefits of AI for business growth and transformation.

Key areas where skills are lacking include data science and analysis (47%), analytical thinking (43%), and problem-solving skills (40%). Regionally, the survey highlights specific gaps: the UK faces a shortage of coding and programming skills, while the USA and India need to strengthen people skills and creativity, respectively. These gaps underscore the critical need for a skilled workforce to support the strategic imperative of AI in business.

Given the shortage of in-house AI skills, enterprises are increasingly turning to external expertise. About 89% of companies indicated a need for external guidance on effective AI implementation, with 57% planning to engage third-party AI experts within the next three years. Currently, a mix of internal and external developers is used by 64% of organizations, with only 21% relying solely on in-house resources.

The reliance on external expertise is driven by cost-effectiveness and the lack of internal training capabilities. However, 67% of respondents also noted a scarcity of external advisors, highlighting a broader challenge in accessing quality AI expertise. To address these shortages, the survey suggests three main strategies:
