Case Study
Real estate firm improves performance monitoring by 40% with UST’s Applied Observability solution
OUR CLIENT
As a global leader in logistics real estate, the customer focuses on the acquisition, development, and management of high-quality industrial properties. It operates a vast portfolio of distribution centers and warehouses near key transportation hubs. Committed to sustainability and innovation, the customer integrates cutting-edge practices to reduce environmental impact while optimizing operational efficiency for its clients.
THE CHALLENGE
Lacking real-time application monitoring contributed to sub-par user experience
The customer wanted to integrate an application performance monitoring (APM) tool with the front-end system of an application hosted by a third-party cloud vendor. The company's IT team needed real-time monitoring and detailed performance metrics, so it could easily understand the root causes of the performance issues. In addition, fragmented application monitoring systems contributed to the visibility issues because key performance metrics, like page load times, network latency, and page rendering speed, were unavailable. These challenges prevented the customer from proactively identifying and remediating issues.
Due to these observability gaps, operations and development teams couldn’t make data-driven decisions to address spiking issues.
THE TRANSFORMATION
A comprehensive observability solution powered by New Relic
UST designed an observability solution for the customer powered by New Relic’s browser agent monitoring. This comprehensive solution captures essential information from the application to provide a transparent picture of performance metrics, including:
- Network time—measuring the duration of data as it travels from server to browser
- Web application time—assessing server-side processing and response times
- Document object model (DOM) processing—tracking the time needed for the browser to build the DOM
- Page rendering—evaluating the time required to render visual elements on user screens
UST’s Applied Observability practice also built powerful, customizable dashboards that parse and display these metrics in real time, enabling IT leaders to see application performance and better understand potential issues. Since the new solution removes monitoring gaps, the customer can compare pre- and post-deployment performance, improving decision-making, system reliability, and customer experiences.
THE IMPACT
A 20% increase in proactive issue identification driven by a 40% improvement in performance monitoring
By leveraging New Relic's real-user monitoring (RUM) capabilities, teams could trace performance issues down to specific user sessions, regions, or devices. The browser agent enabled a persona-based dashboard tailored to various stakeholders, such as developers, operations teams, and business managers. This granularity resulted in faster root-cause analysis, significantly reducing the time-to-resolution for performance-related incidents. The browser agent provided deep insights into application performance, allowing for real-time monitoring of critical metrics, such as page load times, user interactions, and front end errors. The comprehensive data provided by the browser agent enabled a 20% improvement in data-driven decision-making across teams. The browser agent's insights into front end performance allowed for targeted optimizations, such as reducing page load times, improving interactivity, and addressing JavaScript errors.
