Case Study
How a FinTech giant shipped 170+ releases in six years without stalling its core product
UST Tailwind became Q2’s go-to delivery partner, advancing the core SDK/API platform and serving key banking clients in parallel, at speed, for six consecutive years.
OUR CLIENT
Q2 Holdings is a leading provider of digital transformation solutions for financial services institutions. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Q2 serves banks, credit unions, alternative finance companies, and fintechs with a unified digital banking platform used by millions of end customers.
THE CHALLENGE
Serving every client at speed, while still advancing the core platform
Q2 faced a tension familiar to every high-growth SaaS company in financial services: the faster the platform grew, the harder it became to keep the core product moving forward while meeting the customization demands of individual clients.
Three pressure points defined the situation:
- Client wait times were growing. Key accounts expected rapid implementation of customizations built on Q2’s SDK/API. Internal engineering capacity couldn’t absorb both core-product development and bespoke client work without one suffering.
- The core roadmap was at risk. Diverting engineers to client-specific delivery slowed Q2’s ability to ship new platform capabilities — features that every client ultimately depended on.
- Delivery capacity couldn’t scale linearly. Hiring internally for every new client engagement wasn’t viable. Q2 needed a trusted external team that could operate independently, with deep SDK/API knowledge, without management overhead.
The business needed a delivery partner who could take on both tracks: core technology advancement and client-facing customization, without requiring hand-holding or slowing Q2’s internal teams.
THE TRANSFORMATION
An embedded, dual-track delivery model, sustained for six years
The Tailwind team embedded directly into Q2’s delivery organization, operating across two parallel workstreams from day one.
Core technology advancement. Tailwind engineers contributed to Q2’s internal SDK/API development, accelerating the release of new platform capabilities that benefited Q2’s entire client base. This freed Q2’s core engineering team to focus on architecture and product direction.
Custom client delivery. The team built and delivered bespoke solutions for Q2’s key banking clients, leveraging the SDK/API to implement integrations, configurations, and feature extensions tailored to individual institutional requirements at pace, without client wait times compounding.
Trusted extension, not a vendor. Tailwind operated as part of Q2’s delivery fabric: embedded in workflows, familiar with the platform, and capable of executing independently across multiple client engagements simultaneously. The model scaled as Q2 grew, without restart costs or knowledge loss.
Across six years, this model delivered more than 170 projects to production, across both the internal platform and client-facing work, with no disruption to Q2’s core roadmap velocity.
THE IMPACT
Faster time-to-market. Shorter client wait times. A roadmap that kept moving.
The partnership delivered measurable, sustained improvement across every dimension Q2 needed: platform velocity, client satisfaction, and delivery scalability. With Tailwind solutions embedded across both tracks, Q2 could commit to clients with confidence knowing custom delivery would not come at the expense of the core product.
