Case Study

Leading Spanish bank launches robust microservices architecture with Kubernetes

After replacing its legacy business operations system with a new cloud solution, that used microservices and Kubernetes, the bank’s in-house development team accelerated delivery cycles 15%.

OUR CLIENT

The client is a leading Spanish financial services company operating seven regional savings banks in Spain and employing more than 16,000 people nationwide.

THE CHALLENGE

Outdated system no longer able to meet customer needs

When the client approached UST, they were in need of a new system architecture for their core business operations application, which handled several critical functional domains including account management, customer support, treasury, cards, and more. Their legacy system lacked the robustness required to respond to evolving and increasingly complex customer needs. At the time of engagement, the client had already centered on microservices for their new architecture but encountered several issues handling the project in-house. They turned to UST for expertise on best practices and to deliver the fully functional cloud application.

THE TRANSFORMATION

Transition to Kubernetes for a more robust system architecture

UST started by developing a roadmap for the transformation. UST then collaborated with the client to chart application use cases and strategize around solutions to solve problems that existed in each area. This migration roadmap served as a guide to transition to Kubernetes and incorporate new microservices in a revamped and more robust system architecture.

UST’s expertise and experience in building microservices architectures proved critical to addressing issues that the client’s in-house team had been previously unable to resolve. Along the way, UST and the client worked together to establish capabilities across the organization to successfully execute within the new architecture long-term.

THE IMPACT

New internal capabilities, improved delivery schedule

The client’s internal teams were now equipped with best practices and new capabilities that would enable long-term success operating within the new architecture. Eliminating the deficient legacy system and implementing this new solution created a 15% improvement in the client team’s standard development delivery schedule. The client company now had a system in place that could effectively address new and evolving customer needs over time.
